Lens-Artists Challenge #418—Memories

A crossing remembered

This week, Tina asks us to remember. She writes, “Here’s to good times gone by and those that will surely follow… I look forward to your sharing your own memories in response to this week’s challenge.” You can read her full challenge post here.

We’ve just returned from our annual fall road trip with my niece and her husband. A week spent exploring a new-to-us destination brought back memories that fit this week’s theme perfectly. My opening photo goes back to September 2020—the first year of our annual journeys together, a tradition that began in the States and eventually expanded across Europe, Africa, and South America. A newly processed black-and-white version of a ferry crossing Possession Sound in Washington State emphasizes a typically moody autumn morning on the water.

Traveling through Washington State in 2020, we followed State Route 525, a highway that seemed to end at the water’s edge. In reality, the route continues across Possession Sound on the Mukilteo–Clinton ferry, carrying travelers onto Whidbey Island. It was our first-ever auto‑ferry crossing.

Another water-crossing memory also came to mind—a twilight journey from 2025. The Red Funnel Ferry runs daily between Southampton, Great Britain, and the Isle of Wight. That crossing became the subject of a Cellpic Sunday post you can read here.

Our recent family trip to Door County, Wisconsin, featured another auto‑ferry crossing. A 30‑minute ride from the peninsula’s northern tip brought us to Washington Island. Look for more stories and photos from our time in Door County in the coming months. We are already planning new adventures with my niece and her husband, including one that will add another continent to our “been there—done that” list.

Reflecting on Tina’s theme, I realized how often our autumn travels have been marked by water crossings—moments when a road gives way to water and the journey continues in a different rhythm. Almost always, those crossings happen via a bridge, frequently featured in my Cellpic Sunday posts. However, these ferry passages across Possession Sound, crossing the Solent to the Isle of Wight, and over Death’s Door to Washington Island each brought distinct impressions—all without subjecting you to yet another bridge photo. You can find all these photos in 2K HD, with accompanying metadata, in my Flickr album here.

Thanks to Tina for taking us down memory lane. Lynn and I wish her and her husband many good times in their new digs. Last week, Egidio asked, “Where Does It Lead?” in his challenge focusing on leading lines and mysterious places. Next week, I invite you to join me in my challenge, which goes live on October 24 at noon Eastern Time.

If you’re sharing a Lens‑Artists Challenge response for the first time, welcome—we’d love to visit your post. To participate, publish your take on this week’s theme, link back to this page, and add the Lens‑Artists tag so others can discover your work. You’ll find more details on how the challenge works here.
